Strengthen & Pain-Proof Your Back: The McGill Method | Dr. Andrew Huberman
This is a practical guide that complements the solo episode of the Huberman Lab podcast on strengthening and pain-proofing your back. It demonstrates the McGill's Big 3 exercises, developed by Dr. Stuart McGill, a psoas stretch, and a cobra-like pushup to alleviate back pain and strengthen the back effectively. Variations of these exercises are shown to accommodate different fitness levels and anatomical considerations. Additionally, further resources are discussed for those seeking to understand the science behind these exercises and improve their back health.

If you’re a daily smoker and you can honestly say that you’ve generally been living up to your potential regarding your ultimate ambitions, then keep using! That’s not snark, many people absolutely can. Who’s gonna say that Snoop should’ve done more with his career, my mans is in friggin *everything* 😂 And he literally smokes almost constantly. But for me LOL no, I cannot say that. In fact, it made it WAY easier to be content with much, much less than my potential. And IME that’s not exactly an uncommon experience for long term daily smokers. That’s such an insidious side effect. Like, oh no, contentedness! Everything seems more fun, the horror 😂 But for someone like me whom it affects like that and who doesn’t enjoy moderation, it actually is horrifying. This is literally all I have, this one life. How sad would it be if I spent it playing JRPGs in lieu of writing a book, helping those around me, traveling the world, and having the true contentedness of feeling like I’m achieving something real? Daily, all day smoker for over 25 years. Two weeks sober and counting 💪

I miss fasting but I have a physically demanding job that requires the use of carbohydrates. I'm taking lionsmane 5x a week though and I feel confident and also a bit quick at thinking. But nothing compares to that genuine serotonin from intermittent fasting. Everything is easier while fasting and I have the lease amount of social anxiety while on it.

Classic exercises. Been around for decades - if not generations. Glad to see they've stood the test of time. The push-up used to be called McKenzie Extension Exercises (there's several). The 'Bird Dogs' used to be accompanied by an alternative, supine set known as 'Dead Bug' exercises. Still - all great stuff. Validating to see what we used clinically decades ago are still in service. Kudos, Dr. Huberman.

I take a gummy to unwind after work 2-4. nights a week. If I want some more immediate effects or tack on some more high to the gummy I’ll vape a “prescription” cannabis oil, but it’s only a few hits, occasionally. I’m 47 years old and the effects are extremely positive. I don’t ever drink to unwind any more. I feel physically stronger and more focused when I’m practicing my guitar, which I do productively for hours high. It relieves depression and probably some form of adult ADHD I believe I suffer from, (I don’t believe ADHD is so much a disease as the results of a learned coping mechanism from childhood), and it removes a ton of depression I actually don’t even realize is there anymore (I’m so used to it) until it’s gone. I’m more creative and in the moment, which makes me better at conversation. (I currently have an attractive, amazing 37-year-old who texts me for hours because her abusive, sort of boyfriend is a dumbass. I’m not quite sure what to do that yet, but all options either relationship or supportive friendship seem positive to me, and it came about from the THC). There is a definitely a cognitive trade-off when you’re high, the creativity and imagination comes at a cost of certain mental skills being impaired, but this can be overcome to a large degree by certain “techniques”. I’ve always been an advocate for the positive effects of cannabis and have been extremely frustrated that it took this long in my life for the danger and stigma of the ridiculous “Reefer Madness” mentality and corrupt influences keeping it illegal. It’s a great time now to see it going down to Schedule 3. All that said it’s not a f***ing nutrient, and needs to be used with moderation, care and caution. And the “weed lifestyle” people are annoying dumbasses.
